Hi Barry

Welcome aboard - good to hear from you.  Have you recovered from your 15 minutes of fame on "Juke Box Jury"?

Cheers

Hi Barry, nice to have you with us, I remember the red hair that Bill mentioned, I seem to remember as well that you were pretty handy at rugby, what,s Steve on about?
- 7/21/2009 6:10:02 PM
Welcome along Barry, I don't expect you remember me as I'm a tad younger but I do remember you. Did we play in the school 1st or 2nd XV together ?

Hello Gentlemen,
What a surprise to receive a contact from Bill Williams and to learn of this group;

Thank you for that memory stimulation, and yes, flying down Rush Hill is a great memory - rather better than cycling up there which was a rather extreme warm up for games afternoons.

Reckon my memory is nowhere near as good as yours and I do not do much computer stuff, but happy to join in with you all.

As you may expect I am no longer ginger haired but still have some grey stuff.

Will be reading the information with great interest.

Best wishes,

Barry Cannell

hi Tony

Please somebody else say they can remember the "Juke Box Jury" we had in the Assembly hall at Brougham Hayes. I think it was when we were in third year. Jesse James took the role of David Jacobs and Barry was a jury member. You must remember Barry, put me out of my misery and fill in the gaps.

Cheers

I remember it, Steve. Wasn't Ray Jones done up with a blonde wig like Jimmy Savile??

Sorry guys don't remember that one, probably on one of my "days off", Queens birthday or something, heh.heh.

Hi Steve,
"Juke Box Jury"
Yes there are faint memories left of that occasion, mostly of the selection process conducted by a group of prefects.
All very traumatic for a first former although the on stage bit was fine.
At that time I was very keen on music and read both the New Musical Express and Billboard cover to cover. My normal infomation retention for schoolwork was hopeless but for some reason I was an absoloute anorak about music and could tell you the current "Hot 100" in the US and our very own "top 20" plus all the trivila about backing group details etc, - oh dear !!
Pleased to tell you that I quickly recovered from all that and progressed to more normal activities and got stuck in to rugby and cricket and of course venturing into town after school to a coffee bar somewhere at the top of Milsom St to play the pinball machines. Recall perfecting the method of tilting the whole machine to get free go's.
As a new member to the group I am enjoying reading your good work to date and will try and turn up any photos or papers that may contribute.
A couple of names from my era that I have not seen yet are Michael Hunt, Pete Godfrey, David Hammond. Are they about ?
Best
Barry

Hi Barry, its nice to see you getting stuck into posting, it would be nice to have your photo on display, its easy to do if you go into profile and choose a picture you want to edit to fit ,it can be a recent one from your own PC or you can download the school photo from 1962 (yes you are on it, just to the right of the headmaster) resize it to a headshot on the website and thats it just save it when prompted.
Your question about David Hammond-  he may be on the site already as we have four Davids and only one has left his details and a photo (thanks David Warren) so that leaves three without details, we have decided to leave things as they are for the moment to allow them time to add these details as requested when they joined but if they continue to fail to add at least a surname and allow other users the oppertunity to contact them we shall have no choice but to close that account and ask them to rejoin with more detail, it is after all a discussion site to allow members to perhaps contact each other after all this time, have you still got the freckles even though the red hair has gone?

Hi Tony,
I can remember this.  If I remember correctly an ex Tech pupil was a member of Screaming Lord Suchs Group and Jessie James made a comment on the guy. He commented on his academic ability being rather poor and wished him well in the musical world.
James had a very dry sense of humour and although you would not expect it he fitted in well in 'Juke Box Jury"

Hi Ken, nice to hear from you, Stu or Steve would know the answer to that ( all things musical and that)
- 7/29/2009 1:59:42 PM
Afternoon Tony 'n All.

Raining Again, good title for a song that, what do you think. I've sent Ken a message about Sutch and the Savages, just to ask him if he's and more info regarding identity of said old boy, I've got loads of info on the Savages but not on any of their other world connections, did see 'em at the Regency Ballroom a couple of times, absolutely hilarious. Oddly enough the secretary of the Raving Monster Loony Party is the landlord of a pretty decent pub in Great Torrington, the Royal Exchange, if your passing.

Just found out Steve Winwoods playing at Falmouth in August, Steve, unfortunately it's on a day Shirl works late, probably wouldn't get tickets this late in the day anyway, have just booked up for the Willard Grant Conspiracy in Penzance though, (alternative country for those interested), ticket numbers 1 & 2, probably be the only ones there.

Ah well, got to go shopping with she who must be obeyed, no doubt Raindrops will be falling on my head.   Stu

Hi Barry and all

Thank you for your memory and reply. You say you were in your first year and I must have been in third at least. What were your years at Tech'? Do you remember any of the other jurors? Did the jury consist of a representitive from each year?

Now, can anybody confirm another blurry memory? I seem to recall this occured again in the Assembly Hall at Brougham Hayes. It is the only "music lesson" I can recall at BH and was taken by all people Jesse James. For the forty minutes he played 'Nutrocker' by B.B. Bumble and the Stingers.  Most bizarre and I can only think he was hoping we would rather listen to Tchaikovsky!!! If that was the case then he failed. Please somebody else remember this bizarre moment!

I did see Screamin' Lord Sutch and the Savages on many occasions and have to confess it is aslo news to me that an 'old boy' played in the band. I might know somebody that knows the answer, will keep you informed. Stu, remember Lord Sutch with his 'head' on fire singing "Great Balls of Fire" and the infamous toilet seat around his neck? Despite the tomfoolery they were a very tight outfit that played really good rock n' roll and had a brilliant piano player, perhaps that was the old boy?

Keep on thinking

Hi Steve,

Barry C was in the same year as us, X stream I think.

I remember Sutch and the Savages well, carried on in a coffin, bog seat round neck, I remember Roger Daltry of the Who fame, swinging the mike round on about six foot of lead, Sutch did it first but left the mike stand attached, it's a wonder he didn't bludgeon half the audience to death, then there was the chasing of members of the band and assorted girls around the hall with an axe, you don't get entertainers like that anymore, probably just as well what with Health and Safety. I've got a full list of all the members of the Savages from 1960 - 1999 if you're interested. At different timws Nicky Hopkins, Richie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Mick Abrahams, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Matthew Fisher, all played in the band, keyboard player from our era was probably Matthew Fisher (Procal Harem).

Did you ever see any of the Bath Arts Workshop Gigs, i.e. Rocky Ricketts and the Rocketts, yet again more music theater, fake blood and dodgy managers excellent stuff.

Gents,
Trying to pin down dates now - I was in X stream and was born August 1948, so was I in first year for the Juke Box Jury episode ??
Have done a bit more reading on the site and memories are coming back which is great, but it is sad to read of those not still with us.
Cheers

Hi Barry

The only thing I can add is that the JBJ was at Brougham Hayes. This would have put us in the second year at least. Pity nobody else can remember the event!!!!!

Cheers

Hi All, thanks for the momory jog Stu, I went to Moorlands infants school with a Richard "rich" Blackmore .. he lived in Cotswold Road near the school, he may well have gone on to Moorfields Juniors.

I went to South twerton Juniors (can`t remember him being there) .. he could have nbeen at Bath Tech same years as us. I`ll try to find him on the School photo`s and drop him in with the other 133 boys who are listed on the file "pupils remembered" (which now has larger pictures to aid identification). Ray Jones in a blond wig .. doesn`t bear thinking about.
- 7/30/2009 9:39:59 AM
A blonde wig with a "DA"?
- 7/30/2009 1:20:25 PM
Wrong Richie Blackmore, Bill, Riichie Blackmore - guitarist "Deep Purple & Rainbow" originated from WSM but moved to London aged 2, a bit far for a day boy, the search continues.

The date of this JBJ is getting confusing!! I was born in 1950 and started at the Tech in Brougham Hayes in Sept 1961 and saw the JBJ. Now whether I was in the first year or second I can't remember but think it was the first year so you guys must have been in the  3rd, is that right ? I think it must have been at the end of my first year which would have been mid 1962. Am I right ?

Must go now my brain hurts with all this thinking !!!

Hi Rich

I think you are near the mark!! Come on Barry, think hard and put us out of our misery!!! After all you were the star of the show, who were the other jurors?

Cheers
