Academics

Rich, don't remind me about academic skills acquired at school, I didn't even have the saving grace of being good at sports, the only O-level I managed to achieve was Geography, I think that was down to subliminal learning as I went to sleep in most of the classes, never did any homework, but somehow managed to get an A on my report, it was the only one except for one for music in the first year. Strange thing is when I returned to college as an adult student about 10 years ago I got distinctions for my technical drawing, at school it looked like someone had dipped a spider in ink and thrown onto the paper, I also ended up assisting the lectured in practical laying out of geometric designs, a miracle when you consider that maths was a foreign language as far as I was concerned. Art was considered not to be my forte, yet since taking up painting 3 years ago I've sold 9 paintings.
Played junior club rugby in my twenties, raced karts in my thirties, and surfed up until three years ago, can only assume that I was in a dormant state in my adolescence, ( OK tit in a trance).

Hi Stu

I can echo your sentiments. I also left with one O level, mine being in English Language. You can probably tell by my eloquent prose!! I had a good career with BG with several promotions. I did not play rugby at school but enjoyed playing with Walcot Old Boys on leaving school and have some great memories. Went on to be Secretary of Old Players Asscociation for several years. I passed many exams when I left school culminating in my Master of Arts degree. I have lived in Spain for the past two and half years and Sue and myself celebrate our silver wedding anniversary this year. Life is good! Although I did not leave the Tech with many pieces of paper I did love my time there and am sure that it gave me the base for the rest of my life. Getting sentimental now, must go and open a bottle of vino tinto!

I left with a spirit level I think, well I was in a bubble of my own at the time .. did manage to get a handfull of Cuty & Guilds certificates though, mainly in Electronics and Amatuer Radio related subjects ..never missed an episode of Open University either.. regular as laxative I was .. still don`t know where it all went, It`s in there somewhere I suppose.I found education for work purposes for me was on a "needs to know" basis. did an MCSE course in computing while a director in IT support .. gave the books abd CD`s away recently to an enthusiast .. stiill into Mechanical engineering, built my own millimg machine over a twenty five year period ..not too long then .. well, there`s always something extra to fit like motorised auto feed mechanisms etc ..Bill .. Oh and music .. piano I dabble with that as well as a few other hobbies Bill.

Funny innit, rubbish at school then once you leave learning seems to become easy, (easier), I got to Technician level C&G in Electrical Installation, I think it helped that when I arrived at Tech College, Electricians 1, I could use Log tables and a slide rule, all the others had to take off their shoes and socks to count past ten. Became seriously interested in world history while engaged in the antiques trade, and thoroughly engrossed in horticulture when I returmed to college as an adult student. Now taken up painting as a hobby, currently rushing to finish half a dozen pieces for an exhibition at Easter, and I pick up the guitar ow and again, especially if I want to upset the neighbours.

It's amazing how much actually entered the grey matter at school even though we didn't know at the time. These days I curse the fact that I didn't carry on with history, I blame Ma Wynn for that in the first year and Spike Minikin in the second. I love things historic and archaeology, old castles and houses and having a look at digs when they uncover stuff on new building sites.

Like you Bill, I have my reports in the attic from forms 1P, 2P, 3P, 4T and 5T but, as I said in an earlier post, don't know if I want to share with you all the depths I plummeted to apart from Rugby. I recall the letter D for some reason at the moment !!
