House names

3/4/2009 2:42:20 PM
Hi All

If I remember correctly I was in Sheridan house which was yellow. I think Gainsborough was green but what was red and blue?
Can anybody remember the name of the music teacher in our first year? We used to have music lessons twice a week in the basement of St. James's hall if I remember correctly. He disciplined somebody once for eating a sweet in the singing lesson and made a throwaway remark that he did not mind us eating in theory. Consequently we all turned up to the theory lesson with pies, sandwiches and all sundry of food and drink. He went mental!!!! Anybody else remember?

Your right about the houses and the colours, like you I cant remember red and blue, I remember being in yellow, wasn,t it "Jamie" James that took music

Sorry Tony, not convinced. You may be right but the only James I remember was 'Jesse' James the Geography teacher who I believe went on to be Dep. Head at Old Culverhaysians. We will wait and see what the others think!!!

Cheers

I remember about the eating in class Steve, and I think his name was Sid Hinchcliff, a little man with glasses, his lessons were a doddle, what we would later call laid back.

Hi Guys,
I remember a Sid Hingely taking us for music when we moved to Borougham Hayes in 1960, we used the main hall near the front entrance which also doubled up for school lunches, we had to go up on stage to get our meals ...provided we had a ticket that was,  meals were served through the hatch, kitchen building was right behind between the hall and the bee hives... ..who had seconds then? .. Hi

Bill, you are a memory man!! You are so right, Sid Hinchley it was and I remember his distinctive features as big swollen blue lips and a cigarette. rumour had it that he had one lung, a great advert for a music teacher!!

Tony, I remember it has 'Major' Webb and Jack Cosnett. Other names were the terrefic gym trio of Pappin, Edwards and Lyesham.
'Harry' LLoyd - physics, 'Pimple' King and 'Sammy' Seale - Chemistry. Was it Stan Stennet who looked after the bees?

What were those house names?

More later

Hi All

It's me again!!! Funny how things come back to you. 'Joe' Cannon taught French. I always did German, bloody hated it, no wonder I cannot remember the teacher's names!!! I also remember early days 'on the kit' and calling to a house in the Bloomfield area to service a boiler. Who should answer the door but Joe Cannon. His expletive was something along the line of ' Oh bloody hell, not you!' I liked Joe, especially when he supervised the detention class as he made us write lines. I could write fast and detention finished early with Joe. A whole new discusion - who do you remember taking detention classes? Also, in the early days when I was on the kit I had a job issued to run a supply and fit a fire in a house of the Bear Flat. Who should answer the door but Ray Jones!! I made sure I had my index finger along the tenon saw on that job!

How about we make a list of all the teachers we can remember and score them on a scale of 1 to 10 and end up with top teacher and the one we hated most 1959-64? I know without wishing to prejudice the vote that one of the most vindictive and nasty bastards I ever met was Mike Williams!! He no way deserved the lovely Mrs. Williams, figuretavely speaking of course!

Must go now, alcohol taking effect.

Steve, your right about Mike Williams, nasty piece of work, Bill Hayman was always around at the start of detention to carry out the canning, third one and your for it

How about Ray Jones at 10 and Mike Williams on 0 to start on the extremes, all the rest fall somewhere between them

Hi,
I remember Nash being red but can't recall what blue was. They did change to teacher names.Stennet (red), Cannon (blue),Webb (yellow) and I can't think of green. Ault comes to mind but it's a bit foggy. You notice they picked all the athletic teachers as names !!!!!!

I was thinking of teachers the other day and I'll the ones I remember:-Nicholson (head), Hayman(D. Head), Mrs Williams(english ), Mr Williams (chemistry ), Coard (art),Mrs Wynn (history),Frew( RE),Harbour(physics), Mower(tech drawing),Jones(woodwork),Pappin(geog & games),Edwards(games),Leyshon (Games& ?),Alvis(geog),James(maths), Hammond (maths),Stennett (biology),King (biology),Ault(german),Maylor (german),Cannon( french),Webb( english),Cosnett(metalwork), Treaze(woodwork), Clohessy(schoolband part time), Miss Grainger (school secretary,fantasy item with Mrs Williams), Moore ( ?), Naylor (head), Hiller( caretaker), Cowlin (ex pupil, physics ?), Bert ( groundsman at Bradford Rd.)

I don't know about grading. Pete Coard, Mrs Williams, Ray Jones, Joe Cannon and Spider Webb would probably 10 along with Jack Cosnett. Oh and I forgot Spike Minikin( twitching lord Min) and Bevvers (don't provoke me lad, it is foolish to do so) Lloyd and Sammy Seale, I'd have to think about their gradings !!

There must be more.

Rich

Do we count the young blond girl who worked in the Baccy Jar in Brougham Hayes ? If so 15/10 !!!

Wally Hammond tried to teach us science Steve

Someone said there were two Wally Hammonds at one point, which must have been pre '61. The one we had took Maths and had an odd loud voice. I also forgot P W (Killer) Keating, Jimmy the cane and BODMAS in Mathematics.

I thought the chant from the terraces was 'there is only one Wally Hammond'!!! When I was in first year I remember head boy being a chap called Harris. I believe he returned wheh we were in fifth year as a teacher?

Keep thinking

Hi all,
Roger Parr was head boy in 1961 and then Dave Wilce who played for England at U/15. We all went to Twickenham to see them play Wales. The score ? Don't be silly, it was so long ago it must have been in black and white. Do any of you ever remember a Head Boy Called Brown something or other. Bill Hayman was for ever telling us "it wouldn't have been like that in Brown - ???'s day ." Was he sainted or something?
On another subject, Roger Baines was listed on the MSN site as being RIP, I was shocked as a fellow lad from Twerton ( on that subject, where's Twerton Boy? ) I knew nothing of this. I've just had contact from a girl I last saw in 1967 and she confirmed that Roger died of a brain tumour about 10 years ago. How sad. He was Mr. Athletic along with Roger Shore and young Mr Norris !!

Get the scanner out Bill and post those reports, I think I was in my second or third year before I took a report home.
- 3/6/2009 7:55:23 PM

I was relying on Bill the memory man to come up with the house names. We think we have Sheridan - yellow, Gainsborough- green, Nash - red but nothing for blue. I also remember Bill that Ray's boat was on display in the foyer at Brougham Hayes. Ray was a real character, winkle picker shoes with a square back and sideburns was a cert for an A in woodwork!! Anybody remember my Mum who was a cleaner at Brougham Hayes for many years and she loved 'her boys'!!
I have heard of silver surfers but silver bikers? Good luck Bill.
