Technical Information

Hi Guys

I am probably going to regret asking this but my technical ability regarding these infernal machines is limited. Is there a way I can 'back-up' my iTune downloads to an external storage device? At the moment my downloads are on my computer and iPod. I know one of you will know as I am often dumbfounded when you start talking computer wizardy!!

Thank you

Steve

Steve, how's your external storage connected to your computer, if by USB connection can't you copy and paste, or copy to folder, or create playlists on Windows Media Player and copying those to your external storage,  the other option being a USB plug in storage device to transfer between the two, same principles, just a few ideas someone else may have better ideas.
I use a dedicated internal storage disk for my music, don't use it for anything else and hope it doesn't get corrupted, may have to consider external, don't want to lose all those bootlegs.

Hi Stu

Thanks for reply but you are losing me!! My external hard drive is  connected to my laptop via usb2 - pretty good so far? All my own CD's (approx 400) are backed up on this hard drive and I can copy them to CD or memory stick etc. The problem lies with the albums I have downloaded from iTunes. Can I copy them and save them to the hard drive? Hope this all makes sense to you.

Cheers

Hi Steve, I use an external 320 Gigabite drive made by Buffalo and it comes with free software ( Memio) that is easily configured to back up whatever files you want ,photos, music, documents and vids, it uses an external power supply, plugs into the USB port and will add or delete files as you add or remove them to your C drive so keeping an up to date recovery plan if anything should happen to your main drive, you can also copy and paste straight to the drive if you want to, costs about eighty quid but well worth it.
There are quite a few on the market made by all the big hard drive makers but make sure you get some sort of backup software thrown in, just search for USB  hard drive.

Steve can you play the albums you've downloaded with Windows Media Player, if so you should be able to make playlists from them and do it that way, other than that I don't know but it's got to be possible.

Hi Steve, and Stu & Anth,
This may be the ultimate solution from Apple themselves ..Steve .. double click this link below and follow the advice ..apparently it`s the only safe way to backup what you have paid for .. most other methods involve you creating copies of stuff that you can no longer play ..

As usual you come up with the correct info Bill. I posted my reply before Steve said he had an external drive, totally forgot that you need to export your licence as well in order to play from another source.

Spot on Bill, only goes to prove that I don't pay for anything doesn't it.

Good morning all

Thank you Bill, I will give it a try. Does this wealth of knowledge prove that we all went to scholl to early in our lives? One other thing, is there a spell check when I write this?

Sun does not shine everday in Spain, rained most of day yesterday. We live in an agricultural area so the growers will be happy!
To really round it off Bath Rugby go and lose the semi-final against Leicester. Really thought Bath would turn them over but they were tired and Leicester wanted it more. Always next year.

Stu, you keep mentioning free downloads, can I do that? Told you I was computer illeterate!!!!

Hope you all enjoy your Sunday lunchtime pint and thanks very much again Bill.

Cheers
