What!

Sorry guys, stuck for title, though we were getting away from the pub discussion. I do have one or two queries though, Muff Diving, Steve, enlighten me, is it anything like scuba diving or snorkelling, i.e. if you don't come up foe air occasionally you suffocate? By the way I've got a couple of weeks spare in July, if you want to bid for a slice of Stu's job share register here, I do keep the wages though, perks are up to you. It's a hard life but you mustn't weaken.
Conroy you're a lot closer to civilisation up there in Brum land, allegedly, do you get out to see many bands, it's a long drag for us in any direction, catching bands has to be planned a long time in advance, my Mrs. is dragging me up to Westonbirt later this month for Paul Weller, (yet again), and after that Dave Matthews at Brixton Acadamy, I think I'll take the rest of the summer off after that.
Rich, gotta ask, never been to Corfu, done Crete a few times, do they have Raki in Corfu, might have to visit if so, that bottle of matlt's going down well, you wouldn't believe how many spelling corrections I've had to make.

Yours innebriat, inebriate, pissed upedly  Stu

Good morning Stu

I am sure that the lack of hair on your head means you need no explanation of 'muff-diving'. Remember Muffin the Mule? Used to be a kid's programme and then turned into a pleasant past time!! The job invitation sounds interesting but work holds little attraction to me now although the perks are tempting.

I think this is one of the few days in the year when UK weather will be better than here. Still very warm but cloudy and a chance of some precipitation.

Have fun

Hi Steve,

Muffin the Mule, is that anything like Dobbin the Donkey?

Stu - not so sure about the civilisation bit, try Broad Street on a Friday or Saturday night for the neanderthal gatherings. It is the so-called entertainment area of Birmingham, something like 30 - 40 pubs, clubs, restaurants in less than half a mile. All of them filled with bloody kids who can't hold their drink, and many who can't keep it inside them. At the moment not too many people who I want to see. I did see another post about Dweebil Zappa on Sky Arts, he is coming to Symphony Hall on 16th June, I 'may' go to see him, tickets are still available - but I was/am really only a fan of Hot Rats. War of the worlds is on at the NIA - supposed to be a good show, but tickets sold out in minutes - it is only eBay stupid prices now. Steely Dan are at the NIA 29th June - a bit weird but tickets (£50) are not on sale until this Friday?? James Taylor is there on 5th July and yet tickets are already on sale (have been for weeks) The last band I went to see was REM, great performance, on stage for nearly 2 hours, only £35 - very good value for money.

Hi all,
It was me who mentioned Dweezil Zappa. The show on TV really was excellant Conroy. I think if you liked Hot Rats then you must like Zappa's music enough to enjoy his son playing Dad's stuff. I saw Steely Dan when they first toured, after they got back together at the NEC and to be honest the music was brilliant but we were way back on the left of the stage and it could have been anybody onstage, there were no monitors. In fact the thing I enjoyed most on the night was bumping into Roy Wood at the bar before the show.......made my night.

Stu, I think they have racki in Corfu but as far as I know I haven't had any, but of course there are those who remember more then me !!! Then again it could be retsina. I stick to the local beer or a drop of Metaxa.

Muffin the Mule ? Dobbin the Donkey ? Beyond me that is !! I do remember someone mentioned Wetting the Lettuce once, but I was never into salads much, that's why I'm a BFRFB(big fat red faced bugger )

Retsina Rich, only once many years ago drinking with fishermen on Crete, one of the main reasons I don't drink to excess these days, my Mrs wasn't at all pleased at my spending five days with my head down the bog, a bit like drinking Vodka with Russians, best avoided. Raki's Ok, you've just got to remember it's firewater, In Crete it used to be a home made job, get up into the mountains and people had a still in the back yard.
Wetting the Lettuce! new one on me mate, I've obviously been leading a sheltered life.

Hot Rats, great album Conroy, always like Beefhearts vocals on Willie the Pimp, was never a great Zappa fan, but have got a soft spot for Beefheart, strange cove though, must say I agree with your sentiments about McCartney, Band on the Run, good album though. I try not to go to gigs that are to big, too impersonal, and too many gits on their mobile phones telling there equally useless mates about it, I have had, on occasion,  to point out that I don't need a f****** running commentary. That's a grumpy hate, mobile phones, I have got one but it's for my convenience, not anybody else's, it's usually switched off anyway.

Like you Stu, I'm not too keen on the big gigs. The only big gig I did like was RHCP at Murreyfield stadium a few years back. even though there were about 50,000 there it was still fairly intimate.

What I do like going to at the moment is tribute bands. I think that they need to be good musically to get and keep an audience. The best I have seen recently are (in no particular order) U2 Too (the singer looks like bono as well as sounds), Fred Zepplin, The Really Hot Chili Peppers, Completely Free, Stype (REM), Motorkill (1000mph Motorhead).

There are a few local pubs that promote/support this type of entertainment and it is good to be able to stand so close with a pint and watch these young (and not so young) lads knock themselves out to get close to the sound, and sometimes look of the originals.

we also get the Trevor Burton Band and Steve Gibbons Band on a regular basis, these are old lads who can still 'cut the mustard'

I just wish I had more time (and money) to see more.
- 6/3/2009 2:37:22 PM
Trevor Burton, the Move? and Steve Gibbons excellent, he always was good I imagine he's even better now, as I said a couple of weeks back after seeing George Thorogood you can't beat a good solid R 'n B band.

Just spotted one you'll appreciate Conroy as a curry fancier, apparently you're much less likely to suffer from dementia if you have a curry or two each week, wish I'd known before I fried all me brain cells.

Gross!!!

Morning Guys

I guess I have been left behind somewhere as regards my taste in music!!! I have not heard of a lot of the bands you talk about albeit I am sure that is my fault and I will be sampling their talents where I can.

My favourites are mainly stuck in the past and still love the big atrists such  as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis (or Jelly Ree Rewis as he wsa known in China!), Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and of course The Rolling Stones (the Greatest Rock n' Roll band in the world). There are also lesser known bands like the The Fabulous Thunderbirds. One new band I have heard recently and bought their first album is Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. They are not going to change the world but rock along nicely.

If I had to be honest ny greatest love is the blues harmonica and I love the Blues, English or American. Some favourites are Chickenshack, Nine Below Zero, Little Freddie King, Charlie Musselwhite, Dr. Feelgood Potts, Howlin Wolf, B.B. King, Pinetop Perkins,  Hubert Sumlin, John Mayall, John Lee Hooker, Alexis Korner, Jools Holland, the late great Sonny Boy Williamson (a real favourite), Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Nighthawks, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Professor Longhair, Willie Dixon. There are many others that do it for me but I will not bore  you any further!!

Sorry Stu but you did ask!

Sun is shining and the blues are on.

Cheers

Hi guys, well we are back from our short break, there was me thinking we were off to Blue Anchor Bay and sister in law booked a site just outside of Minehead on the Porlock road but all was OK and the weather was fine, two brothers in law and three sisters in law all in tents and vans so we had plenty for rounders, football and cricket and then a mass barbi on Saturday.
I have been reading the posts and as far as music goes you all leave me standing, I am living in the past, I love Freddy and Queen, Elton John, The Stones and still listen to lots of oldies both English and American, nobody has mentioned girl singers yet so I will start with Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Shirly Bassy any one got any more.

Morning Tony

Welcome back from the depths of deepest Somerset!

For me it would have to be Etta James, Annie Lennox and Billie Holiday. All three have voices like angels! If you are lucky enough to be at my funeral you will hear Billie Holiday sing 'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do' as well as 'Miss You' by the Rolling Stones. Could be the start of a whole new thread!!!

Enjoy your day

Steve

Eccles, I wander around Blue Anchor for hours looking for you, well actually I didn't, picked some lovely weather didn't you Tony glad you enjoyed it.

Emmylou Harris, Christine Collister, who is, for the uninitiated English and a great singer of just about any genre as well as being a very nice lady, and of course the late great Janis Joplin.

Interesting one Steve, funeral music, I've chosen mine as well, some time ago now, People Get Ready as performed by Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart, I'll be carried away by a great guitar solo, and The Pilgrim by Steve Earle for a reflection on the road of life. I definately don't want some other bugger choseing something that'll make me roll over in me box, or waffle on some crap about what I was like, turn up, listen to some good music, press the button, and off for a p*** up. That's me.

Well if it's girls singers, then Maggie Bell, Bonnie Raitt and Karen Carpenter push my buttons and I have seen Kitty, Daisy and Lewis on TV and really enjoyed their enthusiasm. Trev Burton and Steve Gibbons are ace. When they were together in the SG band they did some really good stuff apart from Tulane !! I'm rushing here as we're off to Corfu and i'm all behind with the packing !!

Have a great time Rich, when are you off
- 6/5/2009 6:49:37 PM
Hey Stu , have a go at this ,you never know you might end up with a couple of tickets for Glastonbury http://www.spotthebull.co.uk/
- 6/5/2009 9:56:09 PM
Tony, I haven't been to Glastonbury since 1971 and, (a) I'm still trying to get over it, (b) remember who was on the bill, (c) remember who I am, (d) remember where I left my clothes, and (e) where and what's Glastonbury? I think I'll probably give it a miss. I'm going to the LLAMA festival at Lynton instead, couple of pints of cider, bag of fish and chips, in bed (my own) by midnight, much more relaxing these days. While writing this I.m watching the 50 years of Island records on BBC4, some cracking stuff, just right for Friday night.

Hi Stu

Watched the programme last night as well and thought it was excellent. There is some good stuff on BBC4. One more female singer I would have to mention and that is 'Little Miss Dynamite' Brenda Lee.

Where's Bill?

Cheers
